My visits with Dr. La are pleasant. My pregnancy has progressed quite smoothly until the middle of May. I kept coming in with higher than normal blood pressure. Dr. La took my explanation of stress at work and waited until I began summer school. If the blood pressure didn't come back down. He was going to suggest I not work summer school. The first week of summer school, my blood pressure was back to normal so he let me stay. Well Tuesday, my blood pressure was extremely high. There wasn't any stress and he was very concerned. So this week I had to go back and visit with him again this morning. My blood pressure was lower and he was pleased with what he saw on the ultrasound. Then he was done and was preparing to leave the room. In the past right before he leaves, we say a quick good-bye and see you next week. That changed a little this morning.
Here is the end of today's visit:
*Whenever Dr. La speaks, he always has a calm tone.
Dr. La: "Okay, Honey, I will see you next week."
Yes, he calls me honey a lot. It doesn't bother me, because Christian says he looks like a ninja. The two aren't related but...
Me: "Okay. I will see you Tuesday. Tuesday is my day."
Dr. La: "Actually, you are going to see me Monday. I want to make sure your blood pressure doesn't go back up. I will be monitoring you more closely now."
Me: "Oh. Well, are you sure I will know when I am going into labor? I have a friend who has a friend and she was leaking fluid for days. How can I be sure?"
*Dr. La has already gone over all of this with me last week.
Dr. La: "You weren't leaking fluid today. Honey, trust me you will know when the contractions start. Remember what I said about the tightening."
Me: "Yes. I tried to see if I can tell a difference, but I don't think I can. Annnnddd, I have another friend who didn't know. She just had some back pain and just attributed it to the pregnancy. I have back pain at night. It doesn't come and go but I have it."
Dr. La: "Honey, trust me you will know. Remember, the pain will be about a 7. Your back pain is most likely from you carrying her around all day. Painless labor is very rare. I don't think you will have painless labor."
Me: "I am going to feel the pain, huh?"
Dr. La nods his head.
Me: "Well, I want to go to Miller Park tomorrow night. Do you think that is safe? What if my water breaks? What if I go into labor and get stuck in traffic?"
Dr. La: "As long as you feel okay, it should be okay for you to go.You aren't leaving Houston. If you are tired or your feet are really swollen you might want to stay home and rest."
Me: "Should I check my blood pressure at Kroger before I leave?"
Dr. La (now laughing): "Sure."
Me: "Should I go check it everyday?"
Dr. La: "That isn't neccessary."
Me: "So you are sure I will know?"
Dr. La: "Positive."
Me: "Okay. See you Monday."
I was thinking about this conversation while baking cookies* and realized I sound neurotic. I have not shown Dr. La this side of me. Monday he will probably use some of his ninja moves to sneak out of the room before I begin my neuroticism again.
* I will post the cookies tonight or tomorrow.
